Why do we grind our teeth?

There are a range of factors that may cause adults to grind their teeth. From stress and anxiety through to existing dental issues, illnesses, taking particular medicines, alcohol, smoking and using certain recreational drugs.  

Teeth grinding is also common among children. However, they’ll often outgrow it by their teens. 

Signs of teeth grinding

Whether you’re aware that you’re grinding your teeth or not, there are a range of symptoms that indicate it’s happening. These include: 

  • Grinding sounds while you sleep 
  • Headache, jaw and ear pain 
  • Pain and stiffness in the face or jaw 
  • Sensitive teeth 
  • Worn-down teeth 
  • Cracked or chipped tooth enamel 
  • Loose teeth

Teeth grinding treatment

Teeth grinding is a common dental problem and one that we successfully treat regularly with a range of methods, including 

  • Repairing tooth damage
  • Providing you with an occlusal splint (a special mouthguard) to wear at night
  • Short-term medication, such as a muscle relaxant
  • Stress management therapy
